Achaia

I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say…. Hi?

My name is Achaia Connolly Cohen. I’m sixteen. My dad is a writer, well, I thought he was just a writer… That’s complicated. My mom died when I was a baby. I don’t really remember her, so I don’t really miss her. If anything, I guess I am curious about what it would be like to have a mom. Sometimes I think I might get, I don’t know, jealous of girls who have moms.

Don’t get me wrong though! I Like my life with my dad. We travel and move around a lot. I’ve lived in a lot of pretty cool cities. My dad also knows a lot about pretty much everything, so we’re never short on things to talk about. We’ve been moving around since I was thirteen. We don’t usually stay anywhere very long, so I’ve never really had many friends. Or, I didn’t. I never really minded that though. I’m pretty introverted. Not in a shy, people-make-me-uncomfortable way… it’s more of a most-people-annoy-the-crap-out-of-me kind-of way.

I have made some friends recently though, which is new for me. First I met Olivier. He is super nice, and really laid back. He might be the most likable person I’ve ever met. You know those people in life that you come across, and its like an instant-best-friend… that’s Olly. Then there’s Yellaina. Girly-girls usually annoy me, I guess they don’t seem real or genuine to me, it seems like they’re faking everything, all the time. I didn’t want to like Yellaina at first, she kind of freaked me out a bit. But she is genuinely one of the most caring and compassionate people I’ve ever met. She is naturally bubbly and likes pink too much, but if I try to see life through her eyes, its a brighter place.

Amelia is a tough read. I think she might like me, either that, or she wants me dead…? I think we’re alike in that most people annoy us.  She is a slow person to get to know, but I think its worth the patience. She seems to be one of those people who is all or nothing. Once she loves you, she is a fierce, fierce friend.

Emile is Amelia’s twin brother, and they couldn’t be more different. As guarded as Amelia is, Emile was wide open with me from the start. Every time I see him, its like walking into a hug. He is truly easy to talk to about everything. He is an amazing listener, and probably the most selfless person I’ve ever met. He genuinely just loves and cares about people, and what is going on in their lives.

Then there’s Noland. He is kind of the team leader. Noland is one of those people who is too serious for his age, and is really intimidating at first, but then he starts cracking jokes and you think you might have been wrong about him all this time, but you’re not really sure because he is still bossy and annoying sometimes, but then he has  your back and doesn’t let anyone push you around, even though he pushes you around, but he always does it in an “I mean well” sort of way because he has a savoir complex from when he lost his parents, which reminds me, he is the only person I’ve  ever been able to talk to about my mom dying, and I just realized I haven’t breathed in like five minutes. Whew!

I would tell you more about myself, but I’m out of breath.

Noland

Um, hi? I’m Noland.

I guess I’m supposed to tell you about myself? I don’t really know what to tell you, I’m not that interesting… I’m eighteen. I am the first born of the sixth generation of Nephilim, and my generation’s representative on the council of elders, so there’s that? I am also a Guardian, charged with the protection of Achaia bat Shael. The first Guardian to ever be charged with the protection of another Nephilim. Achaia doesn’t really make that easy for me. She’s… stubborn.

I am also the leader of a small dispatch of young Nephilim in training, of my generation. We are a family. My brothers are Emile, and Olivier, and my sisters are Yellaina and Amelia. We’ve all lived together since I was thirteen when I left Germany after my parents died. I excelled in my training and quickly surpassed all of my peers, then was placed in charge of them. I guess I spend so much time training because,  well, I guess you could say I’m not much of a people person. I take pride in my duty, and my ability to perform well, but it may be a bit more than that. My parents are the only Nephilim to have perished. If that extra hour of practice and the skill it harvests could be the difference between life and death, then I’ll spend the extra hours practicing.

Nephilim have a high calling to protect humanity. Life is frail, so I guess in light of that I have a hard time justifying hobbies that don’t aid the cause. I understand that it is important to rest though, so I do have a few hobbies that relax me. I really enjoy reading and music. I’ll deny it if you tell anyone, but I play guitar and piano and might sing for myself on occasion. But I don’t  play in front of anyone else, those things I do for me.

Emile

Hey everyone! I’m Emile. My sister Amelia and I are seventeen. We are Nephilim, the children of the angels that fell with Lucifer. Our parent’s repented, so we aren’t bound to Hell… It’s a long story. Anyway, now we are Guardians. We are assigned Charges, humans who are destined to do important things, and we make sure they stay alive to do them. Well, my siblings and I will be Guardians, most of us are still training. There are me and my twin sister, Amelia, my little brother Olivier, and his girlfriend Yellaina. Noland has finished his training, he is our leader, and is officially a Guardian.

I moved to New York City from France when I was twelve to study under Jacob, Yellaina’s dad. He is a great teacher. He has trained me, not only to wield weapons but also how to use my gift. I can feel other people’s emotions. I’m still learning how to control it, and hone in and narrow it down to tell who is feeling what… It is easier with people I know. One day I will be able to read people a lot easier, until then, I’m training hard and shadowing Noland to see how to be the best Guardian I can be.

Yellaina

Hello everyone!

I’m Yellaina! I’m originally from Russia but I moved to the US with my dad when I was ten. I’m a bit of a closet nerd. I really love, shopping, clothes, and makeup, but I secretly love history and reading anything I can get my hands on, especially if it is in a foreign language. That’s kind of my thing. I love languages.

I’m technically a Nephilim since your father’s heritage wins out, and my dad is a Nephilim. But my mom was a Cherubim. I’m not going to lie, I relate to them a lot more. I’m not into the whole training and violence thing. I would much rather record battles than fight in them. My friends are the strong ones. Amelia is absolutely fearless. Her brother Emile is so compassionate, but don’t let that fool you, he is a fierce fighter. I’m dating their younger brother, Olivier. He is the strongest person I’ve ever met. Most people think that is Noland. But I think it’s Olly. He has always kind of been overlooked by most people, but he handles even that so well.

Then  there’s my new friend Achaia, now she is a fiery little warrior. She is intimidatingly fierce. I wouldn’t stand between her and what she’s after. That’s my family for now…

Olivier

Hey guys! I’m Olivier. I’m super into comic books and working out. I’m the youngest in my family, so I have to make sure I don’t fall behind my older brother Emile, and our adoptive brother Noland. My older sister can be a little scary sometimes, so I try not to tick her off. I’m sort of dating her best friend, which doesn’t make that easy though. Yeah, I have a thing for older ladies… well, just that one 😉 Her name is Yellaina and she is the most beautiful person, inside and out. She’s another reason I work really hard to be the best I can.

Even though I grew up with everyone I just mentioned, I was always a little bit of a baby outcast. The young pup they herded along. But I recently met Achaia, we have so much in common. She’s definitely the best friend I have always wanted. She reads comic books too, and she is my age, so I’m not the baby anymore. I finally have an equal who gets me, it’s awesome. She’s crazy cool too. She is going to make a great Guardian someday. She is going to be the Rocket to my Starlord.

Meet the Nephilim! Character Art Reveal!

I am so excited to finally be able to share some of the amazing artwork by my good friend Phil Thomas, the artist for the series! There’s more than one world full of characters, and I can’t wait for you to meet them all. But for now, we will start with an introduction to our core group of Nephilim. This post is spoiler free, and just an introduction to each character and a little back ground and some quotes, so you can get a feel for their personality. It may also serve as a good quick reference while you’re reading, if you forget who is who!

Achaia Connolly-Cohen

Achaia, is a strong willed 16 year old girl with a stubborn streak she gets from her father and red hair she gets from her mother. Spending most of her adolescent years moving from city to city, she is a professional outcast who has always marched to the beat of her own drum. Maybe she should have been able to tell she didn’t belong in the Mortal world, but when she finds out she is half-angel, she’s not really sure how or if she fits into the Spiritual world either…

Mortal Origin: American (Scotch-Irish/Jewish)

Spiritual Origin: Human/Nephilim

Spiritual Gift: You’ll have to wait and read 😉

“WINGS? We have WINGS? And you didn’t tell me?” – Achaia

“I think she’s fierce. That’s why God painted her hair red. That’s a warning. This one isn’t to be tampered with. Just you watch.” -Yellaina  (about Achaia)

Noland Amsel

Noland, is the eldest Nephilim of his generation, and is thus, its leader and representative in the council of elders. He takes his responsibility seriously, and is often taken even more seriously by those who follow him, loyally. He values the law, but he values those he loves, and his own since of morality even more highly. Having a unique perspective on the mortality of humans, that most Nephilim don’t have, he has learned that the Nephilim don’t have everything right; and that sometimes, you just have to decide for yourself.

Mortal Origin: German

Spiritual Origin: Nephilim

Spiritual Gift: Strength & Fire

“The tongues of men could never accurately describe the gratitude I feel, that I am not yourson‘.” – Noland

“Noland thinks that if he is strong enough, calculated enough, he can save everyone.” – Emile

Emile Alain DuBois

Emile, is the oldest of three with an only-slightly-younger twin-sister, Amelia, and a little brother Olivier. As Noland’s best friend, he is a supportive counselor, a compassionate listener, and a trustworthy companion. Emile understands, more than anyone, Noland’s urge to protect those in his charge, since Emile moved to America with his siblings to study when they were young.

Mortal Origin: French

Spiritual Origin: Nephilim

Spiritual Gift: Emotional Empathy

“Technically… I guess if we trace it back far enough its Lucifer’s fault. If it weren’t for him we wouldn’t be here, demons wouldn’t be here… Everything would be honky dory.” – Emile

“He shouldn’t have done that.” – Yellaina (about Emile)

Amelia DuBois

Amelia, doesn’t have her twin brother’s gentleness or compassion. As hard as she is to get to know, she is even harder to persuade. Amelia is her own force of nature. But she’s only dangerous if she lets you close enough to touch her to begin with.

Mortal Origin: French

Spiritual Origin: Nephilim

Spiritual Gift: Somatic Empathy

“Your human is showing.” – Amelia

“I thought she hated me– Does she hate me?” – Achaia (about Amelia)

Olivier DuBois

Olivier, is Emile and Amelia’s younger brother. He is the lighthearted one, who would rather live in the comic book world, than in the Mortal or Spiritual worlds. As Achaia’s first real friend, he opens a whole new world (literally) to her, that she has never known before.

Mortal Origin: French

Spiritual Origin: Nephilim

Spiritual Gift: Speed

“Yeah, I guess I can just relate to mutants, you know, with the spiritual gifts and all. Some of us pretty much are mutants.” – Olivier

“You’re such a nerd. I’m glad we’re friends.” – Achaia (to Olivier)

Yellaina Minunette Rozanov

Yellaina, is a great angel, just maybe not the best Nephilim. She fits into the Mortal world better than anyone with her love of shopping, talking, and pink. You might forget that she is a Nephilim at all, since she is more interested in talking about boys, than she is learning how to train to decapitate a demon.

Mortal Origin: Russian

Spiritual Origin: Nephilim/Cherubim

Spiritual Gift: Polyglot

“I could smack Elder Joash. Of course I’d be locked up for about a hundred or so years for that, but it would be worth it!” – Yellaina

“I hope you don’t wake up that way every morning.” – Olivier (to Yellaina)

Stay tuned for more fun updates, and news as we approach the release of the book. If you loved the art, and can’t wait to read the book, please share with your friends! Books are always more fun to read when you can talk about it with others!
